Musical Train Ride
The passenger on the left grabbed his guitar from the top bunk and I exchanged a quick smile with the traditionally dressed passenger on the right; both of us excited to hear him play. The man said, “Come join us. We’ll be the audience.” He moved his bag from between him and yet another stranger, I sat down, and they began to sing songs in Hindi. They took turns playing the guitar until all of the passengers in our row were involved. Then our audience grew: a few people from some of the other rows joined as well! People were singing call and response, harmonizing, and videoing each other, of course. I just sat softly clapping my hands and mumblehumming what I could pick up, somehow in the middle of this musical train moment in a train car moving across India and in awe.
